Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj

by Preksha Panchal

The Maha Kumbh Mela is renowned for its grand religious and cultural events, attracting millions of devotees, spiritual leaders, and curious travellers. It represents Hindu spirituality’s essence and the search for liberation through ritual bathing. This narrative review synthesises information regarding its historical origins, organisational challenges, public health management strategies, environmental concerns, social-economic benefits, and the role of modern technological interventions, particularly during the 2025 event. Bathing in the holy rivers during auspicious astrological alignments is believed to wash away sins and free the soul from the cycle of birth and death. The date depends on the positions of Jupiter, the Sun, and the Moon. A standard Kumbh Mela happens every 12 years, an ardh (half) Kumbh happens every 6 years, and the rare one occurs every 144 years at Prayagraj. The Maha Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj is a magnificent celebration of India’s faith, culture, and traditions. It reflects the spiritual unity of millions of people, and showcases India’s rich heritage.
