The Portrait of a Lady

The bond of love between a grandmother and grandson.

The portrait of a lady by Khushwant Singh is touching story about the author's grandmother. She was an old, simple and religious woman who always carried a rosary and spent most of her time praying. In the village, she looked after the author and accompanied him to school. When they moved to the city, their relationship changed because the author became busy with his studies. However her love and care for him never changed. She also loved feeding the sparrows every afternoon. After her death, hundreds of sparrows gathered around her body silently. This shows the deep bond she had with nature and animals. The grandmother was kind, peaceful and selfless. Her character teaches us that true love never fades with time. The chapter beautify highlights the importance of family bond, love and care.
