- Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (1861–1946) was a prominent Indian nationalist, educationist, social reformer, and freedom fighter who played a vital role in India’s political and intellectual awakening during the freedom struggle.
- Born on 25 December 1861 in Allahabad (Prayagraj), Malaviya was deeply influenced by Indian cultural values and modern education. Trained in law, he emerged as a respected lawyer and soon became active in national politics through the Indian National Congress (INC).
- He was elected INC President four times, reflecting his stature within the national movement. Malaviya largely followed a constitutional and moderate approach, advocating Indian rights through legislative reforms, dialogue, and public opinion. He strongly opposed separate electorates, colonial discrimination, and unjust British policies.
- One of his most enduring contributions was in the field of education. He was the chief architect of Banaras Hindu University (BHU), established in 1916, which aimed to combine modern scientific education with Indian cultural traditions. He served as its Vice-Chancellor for nearly two decades, shaping it into a national institution.
- Malaviya also contributed significantly to journalism, using newspapers to spread nationalist ideas and social awareness. As a social reformer, he worked for moral upliftment, education, and national unity.
- In recognition of his selfless service, Mahatma Gandhi honoured him with the title “Mahamana”. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2015. His life represents the powerful link between education, nationalism, and ethical leadership in India’s freedom struggle.
